Each atom of a Trivalent material forms covalent bonds with 3 other atoms and by the same token, Pentavalent atoms form Covalent bonds with 5 other identical atoms.

A pentavalent atom will bond to 5 hydrogen or 5 other monovalent atom, a trivalent one will only bond to three. valency is just the number of hydrogen or monovalent (1 electron in the outermost shell) atoms that an element will bond to.
