The pericycle is a cylinder of parenchyma or sclerenchyma cells that lies just inside the endodermis and is the outer most part of the stele of plants. In plants undergoing secondary growth, the pericycle contributes to the vascular cambium often diverging into a cork cambium.

Pericycle is a primary tissue that maintains meristematic activity and is involved in lateral root initiation and development as well as in secondary root growth. As such it contributes to formation of the root system and gives rise to two secondary meristems in roots: vascular cambium and cork cambium (phellogen).
