Answer:Every month or so, the uterus lining gets thicker to prepare for a fertilized egg if the woman becomes pregnant. If the egg doesn't get fertilized, that lining is released from the body as blood through the vagina. This monthly process is called menstruation or a period.

The ova begin to mature with the onset of puberty (10-12 years of age).
One ovum matures and is released by one of the ovaries once in about 28-30 days. During this period, the wall of the uterus becomes thick so as to receive the egg, in case if it’s fertilized, it begins to develop. This results in pregnancy.
If fertilization does not occur, the released egg, and the thickened lining of the uterus along with the blood is shed off. This causes bleeding in women which is called menstruation or periods. It occurs in about 28-30 days.
Also, the first menstrual flow begins at puberty (10-12 years of age) is termed as menarche and at the age of 45-50, menstrual cycle stops which is called menopause.
