Periscope :

A periscope is an example of multiple reflections which is of a great practical utility . It is defined as an instrument that is used for observing over , around or through a given object or an obstacles which is prevented by direct lines of sight . It works on the basic law of reflection of light .

Structure & Observation of Periscope :

Structure - It is a rectangular tube , bent twice at an angle of 90°at its two ends . In it , two plane mirrors are fitted at an angle of 45°, as (shown in attachment ) .

Observation - The rays of light travelling from the object to be seen , fall on the first mirror , from where they are reflected & seen to the second mirror . The reflected Light from the second mirror is received by the eyes of the observer , who is able to see the object .

Uses of Periscope :

↪ They are used to detect submarines or other objects at different heights from that of viewer .

↪They are used to observe chemical reaction that takes place in a nuclear reactor .

↪Tanks & armoured vehicles uses the periscope to inspect the surroundings .

↪ They also helps military people to observe from their hiding positions .
