The food bolus moves in the alimentary canal by a wave of relaxation followed by a wave of contraction. This movement of muscles is termed as "Peristalsis".

  • The phenomenon of Peristalsis is also known as "Propulsive peristalsis".

  • Peristalsis is an involuntary process in which refers to the rhythmic relaxation and contraction of muscles in the alimentary canal.

  • Peristalsis usually occurs in the Oesophagus (food pipe), the Stomach, in the Small intestine, in the Large intestine and in the Rectum.

  • The rate of peristalsis in the Rectum, is the least.

  • Peristalsis is a part of "Mechanical digestion".

  • Stimulation of the Parasympathetic nervous system leads to the increase in the rate of peristalsis in the gut.

  • Reverse peristalsis results in vomiting.
