Question:-

What Is Peroxisomes?

Answer:-

Peroxisomes absorb nutrients that the cell has acquired. They are very well known for digesting fatty acids. They also play a part in the way organisms digest alcohol (ethanol). Because they do that job, you would expect liver cells to have more peroxisomes than most other cells in a human body.

Peroxisomes are the cell organelles which help in the promotion of "Gluconeogenesis" in organisms.

Extra Information :-

  • Peroxisomes were discovered by the scientists - "Tolbert" and "Yamazaki" in the year 1969.

  • Peroxisomes are either round or oval in shape.

  • Peroxisomes have a diameter ranging between 0.1 to 0.5 micrometre.

  • Peroxisomes are bounded by a single membrane.

  • Peroxisomes contain the enzymes which are responsible for the process of "Peroxide Biosynthesis".

  • Peroxisomes act as a shield which protects the cell from the toxic effects of H₂O₂.

  • Peroxisomes contain oxidising enzymes.

  • The peroxisomes in the mesophyll cells of leaves, play a very important role in the process of "Photorespiration".
