Petroleum is a viscous dark color that ranges from amber to black fluorescent liquid that exists between two layers of non-porous rocks deep within the earth at a depth of around 1000 m to 1500 m. This has an irritating odour. Petroleum is shallower than mud.

Petroleum is a complex mixture of a great number of different forms of organic compounds combined with salt water and silt.

The word petroleum means oil rocks, since it is located deep inside the rock-trapped earth. Petro is rock, and oleum is oil.

The more volatile petroleum components form a gaseous coating over petroleum. Such a gaseous mixture that coats the crude oil is called natural gas.
