Explanation:

• Petroleum (Petra = rock, oleum = oil) is a fossil fuel with the mixture of hydrocarbons. It is a dark viscous liquid. It occurs at various depths under the crust of the Earth.

• It is believed that it was formed beneath the Earth strata by the decomposition of dead remains of organisms living in the sea near a millions of years ago. When these organisms died, their bodies settled at the bottom of the sea and got covered with many layers of sand and clay.

• It is obtained by drilling holes in the Earth's crust. The World's first oil was drilled Pennsylvania, USA in 1859. Eight years later in 1867, oil was struck at Makum in Assam.
