Petroleum is a viscous dark color that ranges from amber to black fluorescent liquid that exists between two layers of non-porous rocks deep within the earth at a depth of around 1000 m to 1500 m. This has an irritating odour. Petroleum is shallower than mud.

Petroleum is a complex mixture of a great number of different forms of organic compounds combined with salt water and silt.

The word petroleum means oil rocks, since it is located deep inside the rock-trapped earth. Petro is rock, and oleum is oil.

The more volatile petroleum components form a gaseous coating over petroleum. Such a gaseous mixture that coats the crude oil is called natural gas.

importance of petroleum:-

(i) Petroleum is the major energy source in India.

(ii) Provides fuel for heat and lighting.

(iii) Provides lubricant for machinery.

(iv) Provides raw material for a number of  manufacturing industries.

(v) Petroleum refineries act as nodal industry  for synthetic, textile, fertilizer and chemical  industries.

(i) Most of the petroleum occurrences in India are  associated with anticlines and fault traps.

(ii) In regions of folding, anticline or domes, it  occurs where oil is trapped in the crest of the up  fold.

☛ Natural gas consist mainly of methane

,with small quantities of ethane and propane. In fact, natural gas consist upto 95% methane, the remaining being ethane and propane.

☛ Natural gas is formed under the earth by the decomposition of vegetables matter lying under water. This decomposition is carried out by anaerobic bacteria in the absence of oxygen.

\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\purple{\bigstar}\:\underbrace{\bf\red{{Uses\:of\:natural\:gas}}}

☛ Natural gas is used as a domestic and industrial fuel.

☛ Natural gas is used as a fuel in thermal power plants for generating electricity.

☛ Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is being used increasingly as a fuel in transport vehicles.

Petroleum gas is like a fossil fuels , it is non -renewable source of energy. it is extracted from. crude oil and natural gas.

Natural gas is hydrocarbon mixture consisting primaly and saturated light parafinns such as mathene and ethane , both of which are gaseous under atmospheric conditions
