The February Revolution, which removed Tsar Nicholas II from power, developed spontaneously out of a series of increasingly violent demonstrations and riots on the streets of Petrograd (present-day St. Petersburg), during a time when the tsar was away from capital visiting troops on the World War I front. Petrograd, was however later renamed as "Leningrad". Troops were brought in to disperse the mobs roaming the streets. During the turmoil of the representatives of the workers organized an assembly known as Petrograd Soviet. Under Lenin's leadership, the Bolsheviks seized key points in Petrograd.
