In endocytosis, a particle (often a bacteria in phagocytosis) is transported into the cell by folding the membrane around the particle and pinching it off on the inside, leaving the particle (or particles) in a vesicle. In exocytosis, a vesicle containing particles (often proteins) is transported out from the cell by a similar, but reverse mechanism, where the vesicle is merged with the cell membrane and the content disposed off on the outside of the cell
