The Amoeba ingests its prey as its food by the process of Phagocytosis. When it comes in contact with food particles or any smaller organism, it forms a Pseudopodia or False feet which engulf the prey by forming a cup around it. This is how Phagocytosis occurs.

What happens after Phagocytosis?

  • The tips of Pseudopodia touches each other and capture the food inside a food vacuole.
  • This acts as a temporary stomach where digestive enzymes and juices are secreted.
  • This is absorbed and assimilated into the cytoplasm evenly and this increases the size of Amoeba.
  • Here, the digested food was absorbed and now it will be used for the production of energy, helps in repair and initiate growth.
  • The left over undigested food is then thrown out of the body of the Amoeba.

Another cell that show Phagocytosis?

Likewise Amoeba, White blood cells also show phagocytosis during the protection of the body from pathogens. When White blood cells detect foreign particles & germs, it engulf it by the process of phagocytosis and forms a phagosome. This destroy the content by acidifying. Later, Lysosome dissolves and destroy the harmful contents.

{ \sf{ \underline {\blue {What \: is \: Phagocytosis \: in \: amoeba:-}}}}

"Phagocytosis is a process wherein a cell binds to the item it wants to engulf on the cell surface and draws the item inward while engulfing around it. "

The process of phagocytosis often happens when the cell is trying to destroy something, like a virus or an infected cell, and is often used by immune system cells.

{ \mathfrak{ Steps \: involves \: in \: Phagocytosis:-}}

✍Activation of the Phagocyte.

✍ Chemotaxis of Phagocytes (for wandering macrophages, neutrophils, and eosinophils) .

✍Attachment of the Phagocyte to the Microbe or Cell.

✍ Ingestion of the Microbe or Cell by the Phagocyte.

White blood cell also follow phagocytosis.

◐They bind to pathogens and internalise them in a phagosome, which acidifies and fuses with lysosomes in order to destroy the contents.
