Bast fibre (also called phloem fibre or skin fibre) is plant fibre collected from the phloem (the "inner bark", sometimes called "skin") or bast surrounding the stem of certain dicotyledonous plants. They support the conductive cells of the phloem and provide strength to the stem.........................

They are also called the bast fibres. These are the sclerenchymatous fibres.

These are much elongated fibres which do not have branches. The fibres have pointed, needle-like apices.

The cell wall of phloem fibres is quite thick due to which they provide mechanical support to the plant.

At maturity, these fibres lose their protoplasm and become dead.

These fibres are generally absent in the primary phloem but are found in the secondary phloem.
