Phlogiston is an early chemical theory, hypothetical principle of fire, of which every combustible substance was in part composed.

In this view, the phenomena of burning, now called oxidation, was caused by the liberation of phlogiston, with the diphlogisticated substance left as ash or residue. The theory attempted to to explain processes such as combustion and rusting, which are now collectively known as oxidation. It was first stated in 1667 by Johan Joachim Becher ans then put together more formally by Gearge Ernest Stahl.
