The photoelectric effect or photoemission is the production of electrons or other free carriers when light is shone onto a material. Electrons emitted in this manner can be called photoelectrons.

Photoelectric effect:
when a photon with a sufficient frequency hits a metal surface, the electron in the metal(generally alkali metals) surface will be ejected or emitted out
the minimum frequency to eject the electron is known as threshold frequency(v₀) to break the electrostatic forces b/w electron and nucleus
v₀ varies from metal to metal
the more the V₀, more will be the kinetic energy of ejected electron
According to the v₀, 3 cases happens
when threshold frequency (v₀) > incident frequency(v), photo electric effect happens, Kinetic energy(KE)>0
when v₀=v, photoelectric effect happens, KE=0
when v₀<v, photo electric effect does not happen, and excitation take place
