Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants synthesize organic food by using carbon dioxide and water as raw materials, in the presence of sunlight.

For every two molecules of water used as a raw material one molecule is released back as a by-product. The overall reaction of photosynthesis can be represented by the reaction in the attachment.

  • Carbon dioxide is obtained from the atmosphere.
  • Water is absorbed from the soil through the root system.
  • Sunlight is trapped by a group of photosensitive pigments called chlorophyll, present in the chloroplasts.
  • Chlorophyll absorbs violet, blue and red lights and reflects green light.
