Photosynthesis:
- Photosynthesis is a process used by plants and other organisms to convert light energy into chemical energy that through cell respiration, can later be released to fuel the organisms activities.
- This chemical energy is stored in carbohydrates molecules such as, sugar and starches which are synthesized from carbon dioxide and water -hence the name photosynthesis ,from the "light", and sunthesis, " putting together".
- Photosynthesis is largely responsible for producing and maintaining the oxygen content of the Earth's atmosphere and supplies most of the energy necessary for life on Earth.
6Co2+ 6H2O→C6H12O6+ 6O2
- Although photosynthesis is performed differently species, the process always begin when energy from light is absorbed by proteins called reaction centers that contains green chlorophyll chromophores.
- In plants, these proteins are held inside organelles called chloroplasts ,which are most abundant in leaf cells, while in bacteria they are embedded in the plasma membrane.
- The uses of the process photo synthesis to transform water, sunlight, and carbon dioxide into oxygen and simple sugars that the plants uses as fuel. We depend on the plants for oxygen production and food.
