Photosynthesis

Definition of Photosynthesis

The process in which Green plants (called Autotrophs ) prepare their own food with the help of raw Materials like Carbon-dioxide and Water in presence of sunlight and green pigment chlorophyll to form Glucose and oxygen (as bi-product) is known as Photosynthesis.

☃Raw material of photosynthesis

Carbon dioxide and water are considered as raw material of photosynthesis.

☃Products of photosynthesis

When Carbon dioxide and water with sunlight react in presence of chlorophyll then Glucose and oxygen are formed as products.

☃Chemical equation for the process of photosynthesis

6H²O\huge \frac{chlorophyll}{sunlight}C⁶H¹²O⁶+6O²

☃Site of photosynthesis

In green plants photosynthesis take place in the chloroplasts which contain green pigment chlorophyll.

☃Events that occur during photosynthesis

Abosorption of sunlight energy by chlorophyll.Conversion of light energy into chemical energy and spliiting of water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen by light energy ( process is called photolysis).Reduction of Carbon dioxide by hydrogen to form Carbohydrate like glucose by utilising the chemical energy (obtained by transformation of light energy).

☃What happens to Extra glucose formed during the process of photosynthesis

The food prepared by the green leaves of a plant is in the form of simple sugar called glucose. This glucose food is prepared in the leaves and then sent to different parts of the plant.

The extra glucose is changed into another food called starch. This starch is stored in the leaves of the plant.

(Glucose and starch belong to a category of foods called Carbohydrates).
