Answer :

Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants prepare their own food by using water and carbon dioxide in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll. 'Photo' means light and synthesis 'means' putting together.

Factors that affect photosynthesis are:

  • Sunlight : It is the ultimate source of light and photosynthesis in green plants. Only 2% of total solar energy reaching the Earth in photosynthesis.
  • Photosynthetic pigment : Photosynthetic pigment serve as antenna to absorb light. So, if the level of chlorophyll is less in plants then rate of photosynthesis slows down.
  • Carbon dioxide : Atmosphere is the main source of carbon dioxide for the terrestrial plants. The rate if photosynthesis increases by increasing the concentration of carbon dioxide. But after a certain limit, the excess concentration of carbon dioxide proves to be toxic to the cells.
  • Water : Only 1% of the absorbed water is utilised in photosynthesis. Less availability of water reduces the rate of photosynthesis. Under water deficient conditions the stomatal aperture remains closed to reduce the loss of water by transportation.
