The mode of arrangement of leaves on the shoot is called phyllotaxy. It is very important to the plant because the leaves are arranged in such a way that there is maximum exposure of leaves to sunlight with minimum overlapping. It may be alternate, opposite or whorled.

Answer:

Phyllotaxy is the arrangement of leaves on a plants stem. The leaves can be arranged in an alternating manner or directly opposite to each other in order to allow maximum exposure of leaves to direct sunlight that is essential in photosynthesis.

Another significance is that phyllotaxy aids in the classification of leaves due to their arrangement, lamina and petiole.
