What is physical and chemical change ?

{\huge{\purple{\underline{\underline{\bf{\pink{\mathfrak{Answer}}}}}}}}

Physical change :

A physical change is one that changes the shape size physiacal state and appearance of a substance but not its chemical composition .

Characteristics of a physical change :

  • No new substance is formed . For example : water and only water is formed when ice melts .
  • There is no change in composition of the substance .
  • There is no alteration in mass .
  • The change is temporary and reversible .

Examples :

  1. Melting of solids to liquids and freezing of liquids to solids .
  2. Crystallization of a substance from its solution .

Chemical change :

A chemical change is permanent change in which the original substance , with its own compostion and properties , give rises to one or more substance with different compostition and properties .

Characteristics of a chemical change :

  • A chemical change is a permanent change .
  • No one or more substance ( called products ) are formed .
  • A change in the mass of specific substance can take place .
  • An exchange of energy is generally involved in a chemical change .

Examples :

  1. Burning of a matchstick .
  2. Decomposition of leave .

Additional shots :

A chemical change results from a chemical reaction, while a physical change is when matter changes forms but not chemical identity. Examples of chemical changes are burning, cooking, rusting, and rotting. Examples of physical changes are boiling, melting, freezing, and shredding. In a physical change the appearance or form of the matter changes but the kind of matter in the substance does not. However in a chemical change, the kind of matter changes and at least one new substance with new properties is formed.
