A landscape includes the physical elements of geophysically defined landforms such as (ice-capped) mountains, hills, water bodies such as rivers, lakes, ponds and the sea, living elements of land cover including indigenous vegetation, human elements including different forms of land use, buildings, and structures e. t. c.

They can also be used to represent nonphysical information, like DNA and brain mapping. Spaces being mapped can be two dimensional e.g the earth's surface or three dimensional like in the earth's crust. Physical maps show the earth's features, like landscapes, mountains, rivers, valleys, deserts, lakes and oceans
