Pietra dura called parchin kari/parchinkari in Indian Subcontinent and is a term for inlay technique of using cut and fitted highly polished colored stones to make images.  

Its considered as a decorative art.  

Stonework is assembled loosely and is fixed stone-by-stone to substrate after previously been "sliced and cut in various shape regions and then joined together."
