what is pil ? Explain with an example

In simple terms, a PIL is a petition that an individual or a non-government organisation or citizen groups, can file in the court seeking justice in an issue that has a larger public interest. It aims at giving common people an access to the judiciary to obtain legal redress for a greater cause.

1.Public Interest Litigation means litigation for the protection of the public interest.
2.Public interest litigation is the power given to the public by courts through judicial activism.
3. The court permits public interest litigation at the instance of public spirited citizens for the enforcement of constitutional o- legal rights.
4.Eg: A PIL relating to Air Pollution. Air Pollution is not an isolated problem affecting only one person. It is an issue affecting the society. Hence, the court entertains petitions from any member of the society relating to low industrial chimneys or any other thing that is causing the problem.
