==>>Pineal gland :- Small, rounded, attached at the posterior aspect of epithalamus by means of pineal stalk ectodermal, found in majority of vertebrates but absent in crocodile, degenerate to form below spot in frog, function as functional 3rd eye or median eye in sphenodon, consist of following 2 cell types.

(I) Pinealocytes :- Modified neurons, synthesize and secrets melatonin, serotonin (5-HT) and adrenocortical - glomarulo- tropin.

(II) supporting neuroglia cell.

==>>Hormones and their functions:-

1. Melatonin :- Amino acid in nature , derived from tryptophan aa. in Lower vertebrates acts on melanophores of dermis to concentrate melanin pigment granule within cytoplasm thus makes the skin coloured.

<> in higher vertebrates (mammals) melatonin inhabit sexual maturity. in human beings pineal gland start degenerate at the age of 10 and accumulates Ca++ Salts within its substance so called brain sand.

<> pineal gland is called biological clock of the body.

<> secretion induced by photosensitization or visual stimuli and follow a diurnal rthym.

2. serotonin or 5-HT vasoconstrictor substance, may induce hypertension.

3. Adreno-glomerulotropin :- stimulates zona glomarulosa of adrenal cortex to release aldosterone.

pinneal gland is pair acceory gland in human beings......and present just above the cerebellum

and it is small rounded and attached to posterior epithalamus.......
