The placenta is an organ that develops in your uterus during pregnancy. This structure provides oxygen and nutrients to your growing baby and removes waste products from your baby's blood. The placenta attaches to the wall of your uterus, and your baby's umbilical cord arises from it.

the chorionic villi and uterine tissue become interdigitated with each other and jointly form a structural and a functional unit between the developing embryo and maternal body called placenta.

it helps in facilitating oxygen supply to the growing foetus, nutrition and also helps in removing the excretory products.
hope it is useful.
