Placenta is a disc like structure to which the foetus is attatched and function as a protective layer as well as medium for exchange of meterials b/w blood of mother and that of foetus so as to provide nourishment to foetus and to help in removing excretory products

The process by which the embro gets attatched to the placenta is called implantation
