The placenta is the highly specialised organ of pregnancy that supports the normal growth and development of the fetus. Growth and function of the placenta are precisely regulated and coordinated to ensure the exchange of nutrients and waste products between the maternal and fetal circulatory systems operates at maximal efficiency.

It is a disc which is embedded in the uterine wall of the mother to nourish the baby. On the baby's side are finger like projections to increase surface area for absorption and on mother's side ate the blood spaces. the nutrients form mother are passed through this and the waste materials form the baby are passed out through it.
