Hii Friend here is ur answer

Function of the Placenta. Theplacenta is the critical link between the developing fetus and the mother. It provides a way to exchange gases, fluids, and wastes. The materials are exchanged from the fetus to the placenta via the umbilical cord.

1) Nutrition
The placenta serves as an interface between the mother and the developing fetus and has three main jobs: Attach the fetus to the uterine wall. Provide nutrients to the fetus. Allow the fetus to transfer waste products to the mother's blood.

Placenta is the structure connecting foetal membrane and the inner uterine wall. It is formed by many finger like projections growing into the uterus from the outer surface of the chorion, called villi. It is described as deciduate, discoidal and haemo-chorionic.

The functions of placenta are:

1. It is nutritive, respiratory and excretory system for foetus: provides oxygen, glucose, amino acids, lipids, minerals, vitamins and other nutrients, taking away carbon dioxide and waste materials.

2. It functions as an endocrine gland secreting hormones such as lactogen, oestrogen/progesterone and human chorionic gonadotropin(HCG).

3. During Parturition: When ACTH is released, steroidal hormones are secreted. This stimulates placenta to produce prostaglandins, which is necessary for muscular contractions.

4. Provides antibodies acting as foetus' immune system.
