A microscopic membrane of lipids and proteins which forms the external boundary of the cytoplasm of a cell or encloses a vacuole, and regulates the passage of molecules in and out of the cytoplasm is known as plasma membrane.

Plasma membrane is the cell membrane which separates the internal content of the cell from its external environment. It has tiny pores on it which enables certain materials to get into the cell and restricts other materials to get into the cell. Thus it is also known as Selectively Permeable Membrane or Semi-Permeable Membrane.
