Plant cells have a protective barrier around them called the cell wall. ... In amongst the cellulose molecules of the cell wall exist plasmodesmata. These plasmodesmata allow cells to connect with one another. The cytosol passes between the cells and even the plasma membrane funnels through the plasmodesmata.
