A plasmodesmata is a channel in the cell wall, through which certain substances and molecules can be brought into or out of the cell. The exchange of substances with the outer environment and the inner environment of the cell also allows communication between the cells. So, in conclusion, one could say that the function of plasmodesmata in plant cells is transportation and communication.
