Plasmolysis is the process in which cells lose water in a hypertonic solution. The reverse process, cytolysis, can occur if the cell is in ahypotonic solution resulting in a lower external osmotic pressure and a net flow of water into the cell. Through observation of plasmolysis and deplasmolysis it is possible to determine the tonicity of the cell's environment as well as the rate solute molecules cross the cellular membrane.

It is the contraction of the protoplasm of cells within plants due to the loss of water through osmosis. It is when the cell membrane peels off of the cell wall and the vacuole collapses when placed in a hypertonic environment. The process of plasmolysis occurs when water is drawn out of the cell into fluids outside of the cell through the process of osmosis. Osmosis occurs when a cell has a higher concentration of water than its surroundings. The phenomenon of plasmolysis is unlikely to occur naturally, and is typically induced in laboratory environments by immersing a plant cell into a strong saline or sucrose solution.
