Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged people to kickstart a new revolution against plastic from 2 October, 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. With this, Modi takes ahead his appeal of a plastic-free India that was made during his Independence Day address earlier this month.

Addressing his monthly radio show “Mann Ki Baat", Modi said time had come for citizens to join hands in curbing ‘single use plastic’. Giving example of merchants who have put placards urging customers to carry their own bags for shopping, the Prime Minister said such a step would not only result in monetary savings but also contribute towards environmental protection.

“This year, on the 2nd of October, when we celebrate Bapu’s 150th birth anniversary, we shall not only dedicate to him an India that is Open Defecation Free, but also shall lay the foundation of a new revolution against plastic, by people themselves, throughout the country," Modi said in his address.

“I urge all municipalities, municipal corporations, District Administration, Gram Panchayats, government and non governmental bodies, organizations, in fact each and every citizen to work towards ensuring adequate arrangement for collection and storage of plastic waste. I also appeal to the corporate sector to come out with ways and means proactively for appropriate disposal of all accumulated plastic," he said, adding that plastics could be recycled and converted into fuel.

On the theme of sustainability, Modi, in his Independence Day speech, had urged people to avoid using plastic bags and rid themselves of the habit of using single-use bags by 2 October. Modi had also urged startups, technicians and entrepreneurs to look at innovative ways to recycle plastic.

Giving a target of safe disposal of plastic waste, Modi on Sunday said it should happen before Diwali this year, which is likely to be celebrated on 27 October. In his address on Sunday, Modi also spoke about Gandhi, his spirit of service and duty. He also urged everyone to take up the fight against malnutrition and participate in campaigns which are being run across the country to tackle it.
