Rigid perfectly plastic material behavior is a simplifying assumption commonly used in modeling of plastic deformation of materials. For an incompressible material, perfectly plastic response requires a Poisson's ratio of 0.5 to enforce incompressibility. For compressible materials, e.g. foams, one can assume a perfectly plastic response, however, this assumption does not necessarily require a Poisson's ratio = 0.5.
