When a material is squeezed, its plasticity refers to its ability to undergo long-term deformation.

Explanation:

  • Plasticity is the ability of a solid to deform permanently without rupturing when subjected to external forces. In contrast, elasticity allows a solid to return to its original shape after a load is removed. Many metal-forming operations (rolling, pressing, forging) and geologic processes involve plastic deformation (rock folding and rock flow within the earth under extremely high pressures and at elevated temperatures).
  • Plasticity refers to either mathematical descriptions of what happens in plastic deformation in terms of stresses, strains, and loads, or physical explanations of plastic flow in terms of atoms, crystals, grains, and structural flaws (dislocations) inside crystals.
