In letterpress printing, a platen is a board which is pressed onto the back of the paper to get the impression from the type. At one time it used to be a wooden board; later it was made of steel.

Platen is a small and flat metal plate or a letterpress that is used in a printing press that presses the paper against the inked type.

  • The Platen's earliest model was attempted by a treadle-operated press created by Daniel Treadwell who was an American living in England. He devised the press alongside Scottish press builder David Napier in 1821.
  • Later on, we get George Phineas Gorden who came to be known as the father of the platen press. He patented the design in 1850 along with improvements in the operations, the grippers, and the ink distribution.
  • The later model was called the Heidelberg Platen Press which was introduced in 1914 but saw production only in 1923 and 1985.
  • Platen's work in the following way: The platen press is a printing press in which paper or other material is forced against a printing surface supported on stationary flatbeds. This creates creases and scoring presses.
  • Today however, the printing press is used digitally but the platen was an important step forward when it comes to the invention of printing.
