What is plecenta? Explain its function

Placenta is an organ formed by chorionic villi of foetal side and endometrium of maternal side.


It provides nourishment to the foetus, helps in gaseous exchange, helps in discharging of nitrogenous waste from foetal blood to maternal blood,stores excess food in the form of glycogen and fats, secretes Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin,Human Placental Lactogen,Human Chorionic Thyrotropin,Human Chorionic Corticotrophin and acts as barrier to prevent entry of harmful substances
