A pleurae is associated with lungs, each lung is enclosed (or closed form the inside) in two membranes called the pleurae. The outer membrane of it is called parietal pleurae. The inner membrane of pleurae is called as visceral pleurae, which closely invests the lungs.
A very narrow in a small space exists between the two pleurae it is called the pleural cavity which contains a specialised fluid for a crucial function called the pleural fluid whxihb is by itself secreted and maintained by pleurae.
The pleural fluid has an important function linked to it, it lubricates the pleurae so that they make slide over each other without friction during breathing, which allows lesser chances of collapses and also helps the Mediastinum to work smoothly without any breakage between them.

Question

What is pleura and its function.

Answer

◇Pleura, plural pleurae, or pleuras, membrane lining the thoracic cavity (parietal pleura) and covering the lungs (visceral pleura).

◇The parietal pleura folds back on itself at the root of the lung to become the visceral pleura. In health the two pleurae are in contact.

◇The function of the pleura is to allow optimal expansion and contraction of the lungs during breathing.

◇The pleural fluid acts as a lubricant, allowing the parietal and visceral pleura to glide over each other friction free.
