Pleura of the Lungs

Step by step explanation

The pleura comprises of two thin layers:

1) The inner layer (visceral pleura): This layer is wrapped around the lungs very tightly, so it cannot be peeled off.

2) The outer layer (parietal pleura): It lines it self across the chest wall.

3) A very thin layer is present between each layers known as the pleural cavity.

4) A liquid known as the pleural fluid is present in the cavity. This aids in the lubrication of the pleural cavity and also promotes the sliding of the two layers.

The two layers of the pleura protects the lungs by providing a cushion like base to the lungs respectively.
