When we breathe, the thin tissues lining the lungs and chest wall, known as the pleura, rub against each other.
Usually this is not a problem, as they are satiny and generate no friction at all.
But, if there is an inflammation around these tissues or infection then it becomes irritated and swollen, causing a lot of pain. This condition is pleurisy.
