To be simple, during the oxidative cleavage of an unsymmetrical ketone, the Keto group is retained by the smallest alkyl group

Poffof's rule is basically used while determining the products formed during oxidation of an unsymmetrical ketone.It states that -C=O goes with that alkyl group which has less number of carbons.
