Political theory is the study of different topics such as justice, rights, politics, law, liberty, etc.

Explanation:

  • In the words of W.C. Coker, ‘When political government and its forms and activities are studied not simply as facts to be described and compared or judged in reference to their immediate and temporary effects, but as facts to be understood and appraised in relation to the constants needs, desires and opinions of men, then we have political theory’.

Characteristics of Political Theory-

  • It is a moral and intellectual creation of society.
  • Every political theory is an explanation in itself, built on the facts which may be valid or not.
  • It contains a brief explanation of man, history and society. It shows how a society works and from what it is made up.
  • It is based on discipline.
  • As Laski put it, the task is not merely one of description of what it is but also a prescription of what ought to be.
  • It plays double role by understanding the society and suggesting the necessary changes.
