The contamination of natural resources, like air and water, by addition of harmful (toxic and poisonous) substances due to various human activities is called pollution. Pollution causes undesirable changes in the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of natural resources which adversely affect both living organisms and non-living objects. Any substance that causes pollution is called a pollutant. Carbon monoxide oxides of sulphur and nitrogen, dust, smoke, sewage, etc., are all pollutants. A substance becomes a pollutant, when its concentration increases beyond a permissible limit in the environment. For example, fertilisers are helpful in increasing the crop yield but when used in excess, they contaminate the soil and surface water. Similarly, increasing percentage of carbon dioxide due to human activities has increased greenhouse effect and global warming.
Major forms of pollution includes:
- Air pollution
- Light pollution
- Litter
- Noise pollution
- Plastic pollution
- Soil contamination
- Radioactive contamination
- Thermal pollution
- Visual pollution
- Water pollution
