Answer:

Light is an electromagnetic wave consisting of electric and magnetic components.

Now concentrate on the electric component. It can vibrate (pulsatile oscillations) in infinite number of planes perpendicular to the direction of propagation.

Now if the light is passed through a polariser ( eg Nicol prism, Polaroid lens)

,then the electric component is restricted to vibrate only in one plane perpendicular to the direction of propagation.

This phenomenon is called polarisation of light.

It has wide application in measuring optical activity of solution, sunglass etc.
