Polyester is a fabric that contains many ester units. These ester units are formed by joining two monomers. They are terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol. The common polyester formed is also called terelene or dacron. It can be blended and drawn into find fibre threads that can be woven to make cloth.

Polyester fibre is very strong. The crease is maintained and it dries easily. It can be blended or woven with wool to make polywool or terewool. With cotton, it forms polycot or terecot. Terecot has better crease maintenance than cotton but its water absorption is less than cotton. Polyester has been good resilience i.e. it has an ability to return to its original shape after it has been stretched or compressed. It is moth resistant.

Due to above properties, polyester can be used in the following ways:

  1. Terelene is elastic so it is used to make conveyor belts.
  2. Being lightweight it is used to make lightweight sails.
  3. It is used for making magnetic recording tapes.
  4. Terecot or polycot is used as dress material.
  5. Terewool or polywool used to make sweaters, shawls, carpets, etc.
