The portal circulation is to deliver blood from some parts of the gastrointestinal tract to the liver. In other words, blood is drained from the digestive organs (and the spleen, gall bladder, and pancreas) and the blood is then delivered to the liver.

The portal system is the system of veins comprising the hepatic portal vein and its tributaries.

The hepatic portal circulation is important in that it captures substances from the digestive system and sends them to the liver to be metabolized. Depending on the substance, such as medication, different methods may be used to introduce them into the body.
