It was not a dark age. It was a period of Buddhist ascendancy and hence modern Hindu scholars call it a dark period. However, Indian culture made tremendous progress. Even the Saka era calender was created during this period showing that there were advances in astronomy and mathematics. Some of this knowledge might have come from the Greeks and Arameans but nevertheless significant advancement of knowledge took place. Similar advances were made is metallurgy, architecture, surgery and sculpture.
