 \bf Potable \: Water

Potable Water If we drink polluted water of rivers and lakes we can fall ill. Water also gets polluted at several places underground and becomes unsuitable for drinking. Water has to be treated to make it suitable for drinking. Water that is suitable for drinking is called potable water.

At homes and in offices, special types of filters are used to remove solid impurities from drinking water. In these filters, a porous pot made of ceramic is used as a filter. As the water passes through the fine pores, the solid impurities are filtered out.

However, though the filtered water appears clean as it is free from solid impurities, it may still have germs in it, and is not potable. At home, water can be made potable by killing the germs in the following ways.

Boiling the water for 15-20 minutes kills all the germs.

Ultraviolet light: A special type of light called ultraviolet light kills germs. It is used in several water purifiers available in the market today.

Reverse osmosis (RO): Water is passed through a special membrane called a semipermeable membrane. It has very fine pores through which water can pass through but not the impurities. RO water filters are commonly available in the market. They remove solid impurities as well as germs.

Chlorination: Chlorine added to water in the form of chlorine tablets or bleaching powder kills germs. However, care has to be taken to add the right quantity of chlorine.
