Suppose, a test charge q is moved in an electric

field from a point A to a point B while all the other

charges in question remain fixed If the electric

potential energy changes by U(b)-U(a) due to this

displacement, we define the potential difference

between the point A and the point B as

v(b) - v(a) =  \frac{u(b) - u(a)}{q}

The potential at a point A is equal to the work done

per unit test charge by an external agent in moving the

test charge from the reference point to the point A

(without changing its kinetic energy).
